The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on journalists to maintain factual and impartial reporting throughout the electoral process to prevent misinformation and promote peaceful elections.
Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), made this appeal during a media forum for reporters, producers, and on-air personalities organized by the Commission.
Olumekun, who was represented by the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, emphasized the media’s crucial role in fostering democracy, stating that democratic elections are impossible without the media.
According to Olumekun, the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) across INEC offices in the 18 local government areas of the state will begin on Wednesday and end on October 29, 2024.
“I urge you to exercise caution and diligently verify any information before dissemination, especially regarding the Commission’s activities and the electoral process,” he stated.
He added, “By upholding the highest standards of professionalism, you can help curb the spread of fake news and ensure the public receives accurate and credible information.
The media plays a pivotal role at every stage of the electoral process.
In the lead-up to the election, we count on you to educate the public on the importance of peaceful participation and provide balanced coverage of political parties and candidates without bias.”
Mr. Biodun Amosun, Administrative Secretary of INEC in Ondo State, said the workshop aimed to equip journalists with detailed information on the guidelines, processes, and procedures for the upcoming election.
He assured that INEC has implemented robust measures to ensure smooth elections, adding, “We are committed to delivering a free, fair, transparent, and credible election, and your cooperation is vital to achieving this goal.”
