As the highly anticipated Edo State governorship election approaches, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has called on political actors, stakeholders, and the electorate to refrain from treating the upcoming polls as a battleground.
Instead, they should view it as an essential democratic exercise aimed at selecting leaders who will foster good governance, accountability, and the development of the state.
The National Chairman of IPAC, Yusuf Dantalle, made this appeal in a statement following a stakeholders’ meeting held on Sunday. His comments were aimed at calming rising tensions as the election date draws near.
He emphasised that elections are a vital aspect of democracy, not a contest of might or power, and urged all participants to approach the process with peace and fairness.
In his statement, Dantalle reiterated the fundamental purpose of elections: to allow citizens to choose leaders who will prioritise the welfare of the people and implement policies that ensure growth and prosperity. He stressed that the upcoming Edo governorship election is no different.
“The election is not a war,” he said. “It is a democratic exercise where voters get to choose leaders who will promote good governance, accountability, and development.”
Dantalle’s message was clear—candidates, political parties, and their supporters must resist the temptation to engage in violent or divisive tactics.
Instead, they should focus on creating a peaceful atmosphere where voters can cast their ballots without fear of intimidation or coercion. He urged stakeholders to put the interests of Edo State above personal ambitions, advocating for an election that is free, fair, and credible.
Dantalle also called on all parties involved to prioritise peace, equity, and justice in their actions leading up to the election.
“As stakeholders, we must prioritise peace, equity, and justice,” he stated. “Let us work together to create an environment conducive to credible elections.”
His words served as a reminder that, in a democratic society, the true power lies with the people, and their collective will must be respected.
The IPAC Chairman stressed that for democracy to thrive, it is crucial that all stakeholders respect the rights of others and adhere to democratic principles.
He urged political parties, candidates, and voters to act responsibly and to respect the electoral process.
He also emphasised the need for unity in ensuring that the elections are conducted in a manner that reflects the will of the people of Edo State.
Dantalle’s message extended to the electorate, urging them to turn out in large numbers on election day to exercise their civic rights.
He encouraged voters to base their decisions on the manifestos, track records, and leadership qualities of the candidates, rather than allowing themselves to be swayed by financial inducements. “Vote-buying undermines the integrity of democracy,” Dantalle warned, adding that the electorate should reject any such attempts to influence their votes.
He further reminded voters that the power to choose their leaders rests solely in their hands, and that this is the essence of democracy. “The decision to choose leaders rests squarely on the shoulders of the people,” he stated.
“This is what makes democracy unique. Leadership should be a selfless service to the people, and no responsible leader would want to impose themselves upon the electorate.”
Dantalle also addressed the roles of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies in ensuring the credibility of the election.
He called on both bodies to remain neutral and impartial throughout the process, as their roles are crucial in maintaining the trust and confidence of the electorate.
“INEC and security agencies must act with impartiality to ensure a credible process,” he said, pointing out that any signs of bias or misconduct could undermine the integrity of the election.
The IPAC Chairman emphasised the importance of transparency in electoral processes, noting that both INEC and security personnel play a key role in safeguarding the democratic rights of the people.
He urged them to fulfil their duties with the highest levels of professionalism and integrity, ensuring that all political actors, voters, and candidates have a fair opportunity to participate in the process.
As the Edo State governorship election draws nearer, Dantalle’s message serves as a timely reminder of the need for all parties to commit to the values of democracy, accountability, and peace.
He called on everyone to join IPAC in working towards deepening democracy in Nigeria, stating that a fair and transparent election in Edo State would further strengthen the country’s democratic institutions.
In conclusion, the IPAC Chairman urged Edo voters to seize the opportunity to shape their future by making informed decisions on election day.
He highlighted the importance of credible elections in fostering development, peace, and good governance, and expressed hope that the upcoming election would serve as a model for future polls across Nigeria.
As Edo State gears up for the governorship election, all eyes will be on the candidates, political parties, and electoral bodies to ensure that the democratic process is upheld, and the will of the people is respected.
Dantalle’s call for peace, fairness, and accountability echoes the aspirations of many Nigerians who are eager to see a transparent and credible election that promotes the welfare of the state and its citizens.
