The International Press Centre (IPC) has issued a call for journalists and media professionals covering the upcoming Edo governorship election on 21 September to prioritise their safety.
The appeal was made by the IPC’s Executive Director, Mr Lanre Arogundade, through a statement released by Melody Akinjiyan, the Press Freedom Officer of the centre.
Arogundade stressed the importance of journalists taking extra precautions while covering the election, citing the persistent risk of attacks on media personnel during election periods.
“It is crucial for journalists covering the Edo election to remain safety-conscious and avoid situations that could jeopardise their well-being,” he warned.
In his statement, Arogundade also called on security agencies and other key stakeholders involved in the electoral process to ensure the protection of journalists.
He expressed concern over the escalating tension and conflict among political actors and other participants in the state’s election process, noting the need for a secure environment for the media to operate effectively.
The IPC’s director further urged security personnel, particularly the Nigerian Police Force, to handle their duties professionally, ensuring the safety of accredited journalists.
“The Inspector General of Police must advise officers in the field to protect accredited journalists, as the media plays a crucial role in the electoral process,” Arogundade stated.
He emphasised that journalists should be granted the necessary rights and privileges to perform their duties, which are integral to ensuring the credibility of the election.
“Journalists are partners in fostering transparency in the electoral process, and their safety must be guaranteed,” he added.
Additionally, Arogundade highlighted the need for journalists to adhere to basic safety protocols while on the field, urging them to take proactive measures to protect themselves from potential harm.
As the Edo governorship election approaches, the IPC’s message serves as a timely reminder of the critical role of the media in the democratic process and the importance of safeguarding their safety during elections.
