Ex Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes has been named 2013 FIFA Coach of the year, pipping fellow retiree Sir Alex Ferguson to win the prestigious award.
.
Heynckes, 68, who retired after the 2012-13 season was concluded, brought the Bayern team together after their devastating 2012 Champions’ League final loss against Chelsea into a near perfect side, dislodging Barcelona from their throne in the process.
.
Bayern only lost once in the entire Bundesliga campaign, winning twenty-nine of their thirty-four matches, finishing with 91 points. That average of 2.67 points per game means that the Bavarian side would have finished with roughly 102 points in the Premier League’s thirty-eight game season.
.
Runners-up Borussia Dortmund finished a colossal twenty-five points behind Bayern. Not only did they in matches, they scored goals for fun. In fact, their 98 goals in 34 games would’ve amounted to 110 in a thirty-eight game season.
.
But Heynckes did not only enjoy success on a domestic scale; although he did win a further two trophies on German soil, Bayern cruised to the Champions’ League title in devastating fashion.
.
Having secured top place in their group, Bayern suffered a wobble in the form of a 2-0 loss at home to Arsenal, but came through that game to coast through their quarter-final tie against Juventus with successive 2-0 wins to set up a mouth-watering tie with Barcelona.
.
Alas, those who were expecting a close encounter were shocked as Die Roten first obliterated Barca 4-0 at the Allianz Arena and continued their dismantling of the Catalan side with a 3-0 victory at the Camp Nou.
.
As domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund completed their own thrashing against Real Madrid, this all- German final provided one of Bayern’s greatest moments, as Arjen Robben’s late goal to win the game 2-1 provided a perfect send off for Heynckes as he bowed out with a second Champions’ League title.
.
The Bayern side that Heynckes built barely had a weak link in sight, as star man Franck Ribery went on to be put on the Ballon d’Or three man shortlist alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
