A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Malam Nasir El-Rufai on Thursday said Nigerians must demand effective representation from elected representatives and also cogent infrastructural development, transparency and leadership that will be accountable to the citizenry.
El-Rufai, who is seeking the governorship ticket for Kaduna State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, made the statement in Kafanchan, headquarters of Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The governorship aspirant was represented by Anthony Ali Wakili, the Director General of his campaign organisation, who was addressing campaign coordinators in the Southern Kaduna Senatorial District, ahead of the APC governorship primary.
“People keep asking me questions on development and I usually tell them that development is not basking in the euphoria of power. Development must be visible and not just fashion. If a system is working and performing, citizens will see and there will be no confusion.
“For instance, if you are driving around Kano today, you will see development and if you landed in Lagos you will see the same thing.
“We must sensitise our countrymen and women to know that development is visible and not fashion. Development, unity and security of a society is like pregnancy, you cannot hide it, the outcome must be visible for all to see on ground and not fashion”, he said.
Mr. Wakili affirmed Mr. El-Rufai’s commitment to issue-based politics.
“Politics is not a do or die affair; it is about service and working practically to achieve cogent development for the common good. If you were in Abuja from 2003 to 2007 you will definitely have seen developmental strides that laid the foundation of its development.
“And so development is our end agenda but we will play by the rules and with high sense of civility as informed people who know the main thrust of governance. We will play issue based politics and nothing contrary. All of us are standing before posterity and so we must re-build a new Nigeria and Kaduna State”.
