The Kano State Government revealed that it expends approximately N1.2 billion monthly to provide portable drinking water in the metropolis, according to the Commissioner for Water Resources, Ali Makoda.
Makoda disclosed this during a media briefing in Kano, highlighting the breakdown of the expenses. He stated, “We spend N400 million monthly on diesel, N387 million on chemicals, while electricity bills take N280 million.”
He attributed the water scarcity in the state capital and its environs to obsolete equipment, particularly at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, a key supplier to the metropolis. Additionally, Makoda noted that the high temperatures in the metropolis have led to increased water consumption.
The commissioner criticized the previous administration for neglecting the water sector, claiming that only 20 percent of the state’s water demand was met during that time.
He asserted that the current administration has increased water supply to meet over 60 percent of the people’s needs.
Makoda also announced that the state government has partnered with the French government to construct the third Kano Water Treatment Plant, with an agreement to spend 63.4 million Euros on the project.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring an adequate supply of drinking water in Kano State.
