Kogi State University Teacher Remanded

Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, yesterday, ordered that Dr. Mohammed Yunus, a lecturer at the Kogi State University, who allegedly sponsored a cell of the Boko Haram sect situated at Igala land in Kogi State, be transferred to Kuje Prison.

Justice Kolawole made the order shortly after the lecturer, Yunus, alongside two other alleged members of the sect, Salami Abdullahi and Umar Musa, pleaded not guilty to an eight-count terrorism charge preferred against them by the Federal Government yesterday.

The government, alleged that the trio had within May and October, 2013, at Ayangba in Kogi State, engaged in an act in furtherance of acts of terrorism by not only acquiring weapons, but also recruiting new members for Boko Haram.

According to the charge, some of the weapons recovered from the accused persons included two AK-47 riffles, two magazines and 60 rounds of live ammunition.

The government told the court that the weapons were buried in the ground, adding that the accused persons earlier confessed that they were Boko Haram members.

Yunus, a lecturer in the Department for Islamic Studies, was identified as the spiritual leader of the terrorist cell, even as the government said it had evidence to show that Abdullahi, hosted most of the meetings held by Boko Haram kingpins in the area.

Government maintained that the nocturnal meetings were usually held either at the private residence of Abdullahi or at his filling station, ASKA, at Ayangba market road in Kogi.

Abdullahi, who claimed he could not understand English language, was alleged to be the major financier of the sect in the state.

By belonging and supporting the illegal activities of a proscribed organisation, the government, said the action of the accused persons ran contrary to sections 4, 10, 12, 16(1) (4), 17 and 18 of the Terrorism Prevention Act, 2013, as amended.
