The Labour Party (LP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to seek help over the increasing cost of living and hardships in the country before they become unmanageable.
The party expressed deep concern about the crisis of food shortages affecting millions of Nigerians since the beginning of the year.
In a statement issued on Monday by Obiora Ifoh, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, the party urged Tinubu to intervene and advised his aides to refrain from making inflammatory, incendiary, careless, and unreasonable comments that could offend the sensibility of average Nigerians.
The LP emphasized the need for practical solutions, stating that no amount of propaganda could change the fact that more Nigerians are falling below the poverty line.
The party lamented the exponential increases in prices of essential commodities such as rice, garri, flour, and protein since January.
According to the LP, there is an air of despondency across the nation, leading to increased crime, particularly among youths, and a rise in suicide cases.
Ifoh criticized the government’s handling of the situation, stating that it either lacks ideas on how to address the unfolding catastrophe or continues to act as if it is still campaigning for office.
The statement highlighted the need to govern based on practical measures rather than whims, attributing the current economic turmoil to poor judgment.
The LP also criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration for increasing spending on the lavish lifestyles of elected officials and worsening corruption among government officials.
