Organised labour in Taraba State brought activities at the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) office in Jalingo to a standstill on Monday.
Despite heavy rainfall in Jalingo, labour leaders proceeded with the picketing of the YEDC office, citing ongoing blackout and recent electricity bill hikes as reasons for their action.
The state chairman of the Trade Unions Congress (TUC), Sule Albasu, stated that they defied the rain to carry out the directive from national leaders.
In line with the national directive, labour leaders in Taraba State picketed the YEDC office in Jalingo, with similar actions carried out in all local government councils in the state.
A labour leader, speaking anonymously, remarked that YEDC’s presence in Taraba is not felt by the people of the state, calling on the federal government to transfer the electricity distribution responsibilities of Taraba, and possibly the entire North East, to different distribution companies.
Some YEDC staff, mostly casual workers, expressed hope that organised labour would pressure the company to regularise their employment status.
