Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has urged organised labour and the Joint National Public Service, Negotiating Council, JNPSNC, to abandon all plans to go on strike.
He pledged that the Federal Government is working extra hard to end the problems over the contentious consequential adjustment.
FG and the JNPSNC held a meeting recently to tackle the dispute over the consequential movement on the new national minimum wage. Yet to come to an agreement, Ngige has now begged the organised labour to show some understanding and give them time.
His words, “I appeal that the Sword of Damocles of strike you should bring it down.
”Collective adjustment is like collective bargaining but has its own limitation. Let’s look at the issue and we will resolve.”
General Secretary of Trade Union Congress, TUC, Comrade Musa Lawal-Ozigi, also had this to say, ”To avoid crisis, it is important to make the workers happy.”
Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige (born 8 August 1952) was governor of Anambra State in Nigeria from 29 May 2003 to 17 March 2006 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Chris Ngige is currently a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was elected Senator for Anambra Central Constituency in April 2011.
A medical doctor by profession, Ngige graduated from the University of Nigeria-Nsukka in 1979. Chris immediately went into the civil service, serving at the National Assembly and State House clinics at different times. He retired in 1998 as a Deputy Director in the Federal Ministry of Health.
Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige joined politics, becoming a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).[citation needed] In 1999, he was Assistant National Secretary and Zonal Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South East region of Nigeria.
On 11 November 2015, Ngige was named minister of Labour and Employment by President Muhammadu Buhari. In 2019, Chris Ngige was Nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari as a returning minister for screening by the house of assembly. On the 21st of August 2019, he was sworn in by the president as the Minister of Labour and Employment.
