The Lagos State Safety Commission has once again demonstrated its commitment to public safety by taking decisive action to seal 19 Bars and Lounges that repeatedly failed to comply with basic safety standards. This move, aimed at safeguarding the well-being of the public, was confirmed by Mr. Lanre Mojola, the Director-General of the Commission.
Despite numerous notices and ample opportunities given to these establishments to submit their Safety Management Systems and rectify identified safety infractions, some operators continued to disregard these regulations. As a result, the Lagos State Safety Commission had no choice but to take action to ensure compliance, and the affected establishments will remain closed until they meet the necessary safety standards.
Among the establishments that have been shut down are well-known venues like Indigo Bar, Mantra Lagos, Taboo Lagos, Slice Lagos, Tulip Lounge, Farm City, and Rumours Night Club. Mr. Mojola emphasized that while these venues play a significant role in the vibrant nightlife and entertainment culture of Lagos, the safety of the citizens is a non-negotiable priority. The Safety Commission will continue to conduct routine inspections to ensure that safety standards are upheld across all sectors within the state.
The Director-General urged the public to report safety infractions at public facilities in the state by contacting 08181002233 or 07000SAFETY. This collaborative effort between the government and the public is essential to maintain a safe and secure environment for all residents.
Background Information:
Earlier, the Lagos State Government had announced its intent to crack down on bars, churches, clubs, mosques, and companies that were causing environmental nuisance in the state. The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this disclosure and warned the management team of Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) to review its operational strategies to align with international best practices.
The government’s decision to close down establishments that pose a risk to the environment and public safety is a proactive measure to create a more liveable and safer Lagos for all its residents. It emphasizes the importance of adhering to safety standards and regulations to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of the public.
The Lagos State Safety Commission’s recent action demonstrates its commitment to enforcing these standards and holding operators accountable for non-compliance. This will not only enhance safety but also send a clear message that the government is serious about ensuring the welfare of its citizens. It serves as a reminder to all businesses and establishments to prioritize safety and adhere to established guidelines to avoid regulatory actions that could impact their operations.
