The Lagos State Government has officially declared a diversion of traffic at the Marine Bridge for an extended period of six weeks, commencing from Friday, November 10, 2023, through Thursday, December 21, 2023. This development is part of the ongoing repair initiatives undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works to address the structural issues afflicting sections of the bridge.
In an official statement, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, outlined the alternative routes available for motorists during the stipulated duration of the project. The strategic redirection aims to ensure a smooth flow of traffic while facilitating the necessary repair works on the Marine Bridge.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
Scene 1:
Motorists intending to reach Mobil Road from Ijora/Apapa Road will be rerouted to Ijora, guiding them to the Total Access Ramp inwards Malu Road. From there, they can seamlessly connect to Mobil Road to reach their intended destinations.
Scene 2:
For those heading towards Ijora/Apapa, the diversion plan directs them to the Apapa-bound ramp of the Marine Bridge. Afterward, a U-turn at Point Road Junction, Inward Marine Bridge, provides access to their desired destinations. Additionally, motorists can opt for the Marine Bridge Access Road to Area B, executing a U-turn at Point Junction Road toward Marine Bridge to resume their journeys.
To manage the redirected traffic and alleviate potential inconveniences, Traffic Personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will be strategically deployed throughout the affected areas. The Commissioner emphasized the importance of motorists exercising patience while navigating the diversion routes.
Background and Project Timeline
This recent announcement builds upon prior traffic diversion plans initiated by the Lagos State Government. In February 2023, a similar plan was put in place for the Apapa-bound lane of Marine Bridge, spanning approximately three months, following notification from the Federal Ministry of Works regarding ongoing emergency repair efforts.
The rehabilitation of Marine Bridge commenced on September 29, 2021, with an initial traffic diversion lasting 12 weeks. This allowed the Federal Government to embark on emergency repair works on various sections of the bridge. Subsequently, in August 2022, the Lagos State Government implemented a traffic plan for the Apapa outbound lane of the bridge, spanning approximately four months, to facilitate emergency repair work.
