Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, emphasized that members do not make N30 million per week and that they are not as wealthy as Nigerians portray them to be.
Abbas made this disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja while addressing the House Press Corps, which was hosted by the ad hoc committee on Media and Public Affairs.
Kingsley Chinda, the minority leader, spoke on behalf of Abbas, who claimed that this branch of government isn’t as wealthy as it is portrayed to be.
“You have heard that members take home N30 million each week, or that we make more than American legislators,” he remarked.
And if you tell people that these things are incorrect, we won’t be successful because it is coming from us, but if it comes from the media, they would believe you because you said it.
He said that fitting a round peg into a round hole was one of the tenets of the tenth assembly.
According to the Speaker, the parliament is still the underappreciated branch of government, and its success is dependent on the media.
