The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old man, Mr. Nnamdi Anyaji, for allegedly killing his 69-year-old mother, Mrs. Dorathy Anyaji, following a dispute over proceeds from cassava sales.
The incident reportedly occurred in Amudo Village, Ekwulobia, where the suspect was said to have used an axe to kill his mother after accusing her of dishonesty regarding the sales.
After the attack, he allegedly attempted to take his own life.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued to journalists in Awka. He said operatives attached to the Ekwulobia Divisional Police Station responded to the distress call and apprehended the suspect at about 1:40 p.m. on April 11, 2025.
“Police Operatives arrested one Nnamdi Anyaji ‘M’ aged 49 years of Amudo Village, Ekwulobia, who attempted to take his own life after killing his mother, Mrs. Dorathy Anyaji, aged 68 years. One axe was recovered at the scene,” the statement read.
Ikenga disclosed that preliminary investigations indicate the suspect was enraged over a perceived lack of transparency by the deceased concerning cassava business earnings.
He added that Anyaji is currently in custody under close monitoring to prevent another suicide attempt and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
