Manchester United are confident of winning the race for in-demand Feyenoord youngster Tahith Chong, a source close to the Premier League club has said.
Chong, who can play in midfield, on the wing or as a striker, is regarded as one of the best young talents to emerge from the Netherlands in recent years.
Clubs including Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with Chong, but the source said that United have been tracking the 16-year-old for some time and believe they are in pole position to secure his signature.
Chong had told FR12.nl in January that he expected to prolong his deal at De Kuip, saying: “It’s true that Manchester United are interested in me, but I just want to stay at Feyenoord. ”
However, the source added that, while Feyenoord had made extensive efforts to keep the player, the Eredivisie club are unable to match the deal United can offer.
United have fallen behind neighbours Manchester City in their youth recruitment and Chong is expected to be the first of several new signings from abroad to initially join the club’s academy as they seek to improve their options.
