Georginio Wijnaldum has said that Saturday’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park is not as big as a game against Manchester United because Everton are not challenging at the top of the league.
“I think if Everton have some good results during the year and are going to play also for the title, I think then it’s a match much bigger than it is right now,” he said.
“Everyone will think now that I think it’s not a big match — but of course it is, and also for the supporters.
“But I think it’s bigger if they’re playing for the title like Manchester does. That’s why I said the game between Manchester and Liverpool is the bigger game.”
Wijanldum compared the situation to that at his first club Feyenoord, whose local derby is against fellow Rotterdam club Sparta but whose title rivals are Ajax.
“For Feyenoord the biggest game is Ajax, but if Sparta are going to play for the title then that will be the biggest game,” he said. “It depends how both teams are doing.”
