Report from Ministry of Power, Abuja.
The Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo has met with the owners of Generation and Distribution Companies in Abuja, to fine-tune ways of boosting electricity supply nation-wide. The development is coming on the heels of additional generation capacity occasioned by the recent commissioning of National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs) in Alaoji and Olorunsogo; and in view of plans for imminent commissioning of other NIPP plants, following the completion of these projects.
While setting the agenda for the meeting, the Minister described the distribution Companies as the vital link in the service delivery chain.
He expressed the strong commitment and willingness of the Government to continue to support the operations of the generation and distribution Companies to actualize the plans to meet the energy needs of customers in both private and public sectors.
The Minister pointed out the need for synergy among all power sector stakeholders.
Professor Nebo, while addressing issues raised by the investors, said that the case was being made for Government to keep faith with the contractual commitment of further reduction in both commercial and technical losses, which have been a big problem in the sector over the years.
He also commended the new owners for the commitment and focus in revamping and upgrading inherited facilities which has resulted in substantial increase in delivery capacities.
On their request for cost reflective tariffs from Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Minister assured them that Government is mindful of its impact in the survival of the entire sector, hence will do all it can to address the problem.
