In response to the controversy surrounding the proposed cybersecurity levy, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to educate the public about the policy.
The CBN had issued a circular directing banks to impose a 0.5% charge on certain transactions, sparking debate and criticism amidst the country’s economic challenges.
NANS President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, stated that the CBN’s decision could help address cybersecurity threats in Nigeria’s digital space but emphasized the need for thorough stakeholder engagement and public enlightenment.
Emonefe highlighted recent incidents, such as the exploitation of cryptocurrency platforms, as evidence of cybersecurity vulnerabilities that endanger economic stability and citizen privacy.
The statement emphasized the importance of dispelling misconceptions about the levy, particularly regarding its purpose as a revenue-generating tool for the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
NANS called for transparency and effective communication to ensure that the public understands the genuine intent behind the cybersecurity levy.
