After about one and a half years of construction, the main hallowed chambers of the Senate and the House of Representatives are nearing completion, prompting lawmakers in both chambers to prepare to vacate the temporary chambers and relocate back to the main chambers next month.
The upgraded and reconfigured hallowed chambers, being handled by Visible Construction Company Nigeria Limited, are in the final stages of completion.
All state-of-the-art chairs for federal lawmakers have been fixed, and sitting terraces have been extended.
Tajudeen Olanipekun, the Project Engineer of the construction firm, assured journalists last week that the finishing stages of work are being carried out speedily with required expertise and precision for the practical transformation of the entire ambience of the space in and around the hallowed chambers, aiming for project delivery next month.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on the Clerk to the National Assembly, Alhaji Sani Tambawal, expressing the chambers’ eagerness to move back to their main chambers as soon as possible.
Akpabio’s directive to the CNA was given during an interactive session with journalists covering the Senate, where he emphasized the unsuitability of the temporary chambers for hosting visitors from outside the country.
The renovation contract, awarded by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to Visible Construction Limited for N30 billion, also includes the rehabilitation of office buildings housing the office accommodation for Senators and Honourable Members, watertightness of the roof of the complex, the cooling system, and replacement of inoperable lifts in the White House, House of Representatives, and the new Senate Wing.
