The Ndigbo Unity Forum (NUF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as part of efforts to address the ongoing unrest in the South-East region.
In a statement issued by NUF President Augustine Chukwudum and Secretary-General Tony Igbokwe, the group stated that Kanu’s continued detention has contributed to the disruption of daily life in the region, including the frequent Monday sit-at-home protests that have severely impacted the local economy and education system.
The group highlighted the significant financial losses and academic setbacks caused by these protests, which have become a recurring issue since Kanu’s arrest.
NUF criticized previous administrations for disregarding calls from prominent Igbo leaders for Kanu’s release, pointing out that the South-East, once a relatively peaceful region, has faced escalating challenges since his detention.
To resolve the issue, NUF proposed the formation of a delegation made up of South-East governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and influential Igbo women leaders to engage President Tinubu in negotiations for Kanu’s release.
Additionally, the group urged South-East governors to focus on the region’s development, particularly in the areas of security, agriculture, and infrastructure.
NUF emphasized the region’s potential to generate substantial revenue through agricultural initiatives and called for greater attention to these sectors to foster long-term growth and stability.
