Adamawa State (NEMA Report) The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed more personnel, water tanks and MICU Ambulance to improve the welfare and management of IDPs in camps within Adamawa State as a result of the findings from the detailed assessment on the operations of internally displaced persons’ camps in the State.
According to the release by the Publicity Department of the Agency on Tuesday November 25, 2014, the assessment was conducted in Adamawa State by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNCHR) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the Nigerian Red Cross; Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) and the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution.
The report indicated that the Director – General of NEMA, Muhammad Sani Sidi informed that the personnel deployed to the State would help in maintaining proper and modern camp management and camp coordination, whilst the mobile intensive care unit ambulance would be stationed to respond to emergencies in any of the camps. Adding, the Agency in collaboration with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross are doing all possibilities to identify those IDPs living in host communities, so that they too would benefit from the relief items provided.
Sani Sidi expressed the Agency’s readiness to work with all religious bodies and NGOs in a coordinated manner; saying an ad – hoc committee set up by NEMA and headed by Sa’ad Bello has already commenced operation. “IDPs are being re-registered and issued with identity numbers; new camps have been identified in Bekaji area of Jimeta, Numan and Shelleng and host communities are being accessed,” he stated.
“Relief items have been deployed to those new areas identified. IDPs in the Nyako Housing Camp are being moved to other camps with better facilities as there was a constraint in providing better facilities there by the owners of the property. Although a small number of the IDPs have insisted that they want to remain there after much appeal, they will be provided for in the interim.”
