The Nigeria Police Force has announced plans to review its ban on tinted glass permits, which was initially imposed in 2022 due to concerns about the role of tinted glass in aiding crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, illegal transportation of firearms, and human trafficking.
In a statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that the proposed lifting of the ban would be accompanied by stringent measures to prevent abuse and ensure strict compliance with guidelines governing the issuance and use of tinted glass permits.
Adejobi revealed that ICT analysts and Enforcement Officers nationwide would undergo comprehensive training scheduled for February 29, 2024, before the reopening of tinted glass permit issuance.
This training aims to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to regulate the registration process, guide registrants on portal use, address public complaints, and enforce compliance effectively.
The proposed tinted glass permit will include distinctive features such as a QR code linked to a central database for real-time verification, unique serial numbers correlated with vehicle and owner details, and a digital hologram ensuring authenticity and integrity, among other measures, to enhance enforcement efficiency and security.
The statement emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between public safety, individual freedoms, and national security.
It also assured the public of updates on the implementation of the reviewed process, highlighting the Police Force’s commitment to transparency and accountability in maintaining internal security.
