Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has suggested that the Federal Government increase salaries to help alleviate the current economic condition.
The Speaker made the plea on Thursday during a public lecture in Abuja’s State House Banquet Hall during Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary.
The Federal Government, he said, should capitalise on the cooperation already present across its various branches in order to provide democratic dividends to the people of Nigeria.
An invited speaker, Dr. Goke Adegoroye, spoke at a lecture on the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration with the theme, “Actualizing the vision of renewed hope for socio-economic development through effective leadership.” He lauded President Bola Tinubu for his efforts thus far in repositioning governance and resetting the economy.
But he asked the government to prioritise important parts of the Renewed Hopa Agenda to make sure the effects are felt throughout the economy.
The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has promised that the promises made by the Tinubu administration will be kept, assuring Nigerians that their efforts will not be in vain.
He said that the government would work towards a nation in which no one would need to rely on government assistance of any kind to make ends meet.
“Today, we celebrate Nigeria’s effort to alter its course of history. Here, on the brink of history, we can think back on a country that proved its doubters wrong and became a symbol of fortitude.
Vice President Osinbajo said, “Despite the conspiracies of minor vested interests, we have not only survived but thrived over the past 63 years because of our collective resolve, our commitment to progress, and the enduring spirit of unity that binds us together from Aba, down through Ogbomosho to Zaria.”
He said, “we are here to remind ourselves that the future we promised Nigerians isn’t an empty performance for electoral favours,” despite the fact that this anniversary provides Nigeria with another opportunity to recognise the cross-regional bonds that have kept the country standing as Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy.
The Vice President said that a great nation’s destiny is not decided by the occurrence of a socio-economic issue, but by the intention, honesty, and innovative ideas of its leaders, and their dedication to implementing them.
“We cannot renew the hope of the nation unless we deliver on our promise to drive food security and eradicate poverty,” he remarked. Facilitating access to money, bolstering national security, and optimising the business environment are all necessary if we are to support economic growth and cultivate job creation.
To create the Nigeria we envision, we pledge to support the rule of law and to combat corruption. None of this is possible unless every American continues to play a vital role as a strategic partner in advancing our nation’s long-term goals.
