A recent report by Brand Finance, a London-based brand valuation consultancy, has highlighted the dominance of banking brands in Nigeria’s brand landscape, even amidst currency devaluation and rising inflation.
According to the analysis spanning from March 2023 to March of the current year, banking brands accounted for half of the total brand value of the nation’s top 25 brands, with five banks securing positions among the top seven.
The report emphasized the resilience and growth of Nigeria’s top banking brands, noting their ability to maintain brand strength despite the declining value of the naira.
This resilience was reflected in improved Brand Strength Index scores across the ranking.
Brand Finance utilized the royalty relief approach to measure organization brand value, considering both market and income valuation approaches. The analysis also highlighted the internationality of banking brands, shedding light on their positioning and performance in a globalized market.
Key findings from the report include Access Bank maintaining its position as Nigeria’s most valuable brand, experiencing a significant 73 percent increase in brand value. Stanbic IBTC emerged as the fastest-growing brand in the ranking, with a notable 184 percent increase in brand value.
Other notable mentions include GTCO, Star beer, and Orijin, which demonstrated impressive growth and strength in their respective categories.
Despite economic challenges, Nigeria’s leading brands have displayed remarkable resilience and continued to flourish. Many have expanded their influence beyond domestic borders, indicating a growing presence across the continent.
However, economic pressures persist, with double-digit inflation and currency devaluation impacting consumers’ purchasing power and businesses’ operating costs. The removal of subsidies and currency controls have further exacerbated these challenges, leading to increased transportation fares and heightened inflation rates.
In light of these challenges, Nigerian brands continue to navigate the economic landscape, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity.
