The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has brought attention to what it claims is a credible threat to the lives of its members and a plot to attack the party’s national secretariat.
In a letter titled “Threat to Lives of Some NNPP Leaders: Request for Action to Protect Lives and Property,” the acting national chairman, Abba Kawu Alli, addressed the Inspector General of Police.
The party alleges that individuals, operating under the guise of “unknown gunmen,” are planning to carry out an assault on the NNPP’s National Secretariat, with specific intentions to eliminate some of its leaders.
In the letter, Alli emphasized the peaceful nature of the NNPP, stating that the party has never resorted to violence to assert its demands.
“We wish to use this medium to inform your good office of reports of threats to lives and property of some leaders of our great party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP),” the letter states.
“According to information at our disposal, there are plans by some people under the tag of ‘unknown gunmen’ to attack the National Secretariat of our party while, at the same time, some leaders of the party have been marked down for elimination.”
The NNPP is urging a thorough investigation into the reported threats and is calling for increased security measures around its national headquarters and the safeguarding of party leaders.
The party highlights its commitment to peaceful means of expression, citing past attacks that did not prompt violent reprisals.
“It would be recalled that several attacks on the party in the past have never elicited reprisals from us because we believe no country can progress in an atmosphere of anarchy.
We, therefore, urge you, sir, to urgently look into this our request,” the letter concludes.
