The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence, (NSCDC), Sokoto State Command, has arrested sixteen suspected burglars, who allegedly broke into some shops at the Sokoto Central Market.
Presenting the suspects before newsmen in Sokoto, on Friday, the State Commandant of the corps, Mr Babangida Abdullahi, said the age of the suspects ranges between 11 and 30 years old.
“The suspects were apprehended by officers and men of the command on Thursday night, while committing the crime at the Sokoto central market.
”Items such as: clothing materials and bundles of locally chewing sticks were recovered from the suspects at the point of their arrest, ” he said.
He decried the recurring cases of burglary in the market in the past few months, saying ”the senior ones among the suspects were training the younger ones.
”The suspects were using locally made tools to cut the locks of the affected shops to gain access into them.”
Abdullahi said that the suspects were hiding within the market during the day time, only for them to come out in the night to perpetrate their evil acts.
The NSCDC commandant said the suspects would soon be charged to court, while the under-aged ones among them would be taken to Juvenile Court.
The DG of the market, Alhaji Abdullahi Bafarawa, commended the Corps for properly coordinating the outpost at the market.
According to him, such efforts would go a long way to reduce criminal activities in the market.
