The Cross River Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrested no fewer than 126 individuals for various offences between January and December 2024.
Command spokesperson, John Eremi, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar on Wednesday.
According to Eremi, 11 of the cases were charged to court within the year under review, resulting in three convictions.
He added that while one case is currently on appeal, the command successfully secured two convictions.
The spokesperson highlighted that the command recorded zero arrests for crude oil theft in 2024 but achieved notable results in other areas.
“From the 126 arrests made, 10 were for illegal mining, while 116 were for other sundry offences,” Eremi said.
Despite these achievements, Eremi pointed out the significant challenges faced by the command, including the damage caused when their office roof was blown off by the wind in 2024.
“Even with the bitter experience the command went through in 2024, we still recorded some level of success,” he added.
Eremi also cited operational challenges such as inadequate office accommodation, a lack of operational vehicles, and a shortage of manpower, which continue to hinder the command’s effectiveness.
