Former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili cautioned leaders in Nigeria and Kenya on Thursday against high-handedness, warning it is unwise for leaders to push their citizens to the breaking point.
In a post on X, Ezekwesili reflected on recent events and questioned whether Nigerian and Kenyan leaders would learn the right lessons.
“It is unwise as a Leader to push your Citizens to the point where they say, ‘Enough is simply now Enough,’” Ezekwesili stated.
“According to Proverbs, Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.”
She added, “Will Hubris allow the contemporaries of Kenyan politicians in Nigeria and the rest of the continent to learn the right lesson from recent events? I won’t bet on it because Wisdom is the principal thing.”
Ezekwesili’s comments came after Kenyans took to the streets to protest against President William Ruto’s decision regarding the Finance Bill 2024.
The aggrieved citizens also demonstrated against the government’s tax increase plan, arguing it would exacerbate their financial struggles.
Initially, Ruto labeled the protesters’ actions as “treasonous” and deployed soldiers to disperse them.
However, he later bowed to the protesters’ demands and declined to assent to the proposed legislation.
