Award-winning journalist Tolu Ogunlesi has taken the widely reported plans of his appointment as Special Assistant on New Media to President Muhammadu Buhari with a pinch of salt.
Popular online news platform which many Nigerians regard as credible Premium Times had reported that Ogunlesi has undergone security screening and his appointment is to be announced in the coming days. The news platform cited officials at the presidency.
However, the prolific writer responded via Twitter where he spends most of the time not spent writing.

Tolu Ogunlesi is currently trending in Nigeria as a result of the report.
Mr. Ogunlesi was in favour of President Buhari during the presidential campaigns but he was very professional about it and hardly got into altercations with opposition supporters like several other political supporters. When the president just joined twitter, he was for a while the only one among Buhari’s first few followers who is not a politician or had not held one public office or the other.
If he turns out to be appointed, Mr Ogunlesi will be the Buhari administration’s social media anchor.
Tolu Ogunlesi is a freelance writer and a regular contributor to The Punch Newspapers among other publications.
He is a two-time winner of the CNN Multichoice African Journalism Awards, and a 2013 Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Fellow.
If Tolu Ogunlesi rejects an appointment to become the president’s SA on social media, Buhari is not expected to look farther than the young social media gurus who are among the 51 people he follows on Twitter.
