A fire outbreak involving a petrol tanker and an articulated truck on the Oko-Olowo-Jebba highway in Kwara State claimed the life of a man and a dog on Friday morning.
The incident, which occurred at about 8:27 a.m. at Iyemaja Village, resulted in the death of the truck driver, identified as Wasiu.
According to a statement by the spokesperson of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, the petrol tanker was carrying 33,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), while the truck driven by Wasiu was loaded with fertilizer.
Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to contain the blaze, preventing further damage and salvaging the fertilizer cargo.

“Preliminary investigations indicated that the incident occurred when the articulated truck attempted to overtake the petrol tanker,” Adekunle stated.
“In the process, it struck the rear of the tanker, causing a fuel spill that ignited a fire. Tragically, the driver of the truck, who was trapped, lost his life.”
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, urged motorists to exercise patience, adhere to safety precautions, and prioritize road safety to prevent such tragedies.
