A canoe accident in Borong, a riverine community in Demsa Local Government Area of Adamawa State, has left one person dead and two others missing.
The mishap occurred on Tuesday, with details emerging on Wednesday morning.
Umar Musa, a passenger on the canoe, recounted that the vessel struck a piece of wood in the river, triggering panic among those on board.
“Some passengers jumped into the water, while others, like me, stayed in the canoe and were rescued,” Musa said.
He confirmed that one of the three individuals who jumped into the river was later found dead, while the other two remain unaccounted for.
Another passenger, Abubakar Shuaibu, expressed concern over the tragedy, noting that several passengers had initially considered jumping into the water after the impact.
“The driver had warned us earlier not to jump, and that warning probably prevented more casualties,” Shuaibu said.
As of 11 a.m. on Wednesday, search efforts were ongoing, with no updates yet on the whereabouts of the two missing individuals.
