Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation reported that more than 2,000 gender-based domestic violence cases have been treated in the last one year.
The State Commissioner in charge of the Ministry, Hon. (Mrs.) Lola Akande, disclosed on Thursday while fielding questions from newsmen at a symposium organized by the Ministry in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) at the event to round up the annual 16 Days Activism Against Gender Based Violence in Lagos.
While lamenting the increase in domestic violence and child abuse cases in the State, the Commissioner noted that, many of such cases are been reported at the Ministry on a daily bases.
She enjoined all couples to be patient in handing disagreement and domestic issues in their homes in order to avoid unnecessary brawl.
She added that, there is need for the women to be submissive to their spouses while the men should not, under any circumstance, raise their hands against their wives.
She also implored all parents, guardians and caregivers to invest whole heartedly in training their children, stressing that, every parent must train, nurture and bring up their children and wards in ways that will enable them inculcate and exhibit peaceful attitude and behaviour.
The Commissioner, however, implored the good people of Lagos State to take advantage of the Ministry’s help lines 08102678443, 08085754226, and 08085594141 to report all forms of sexual violence and child abuse in their respective communities for immediate response.
Earlier, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Mrs Elizabeth Olanike Oduwole, commended the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for their tremendous support for the government in the fight against domestic violence in the State.
She enjoined everyone present at the symposium to see the event as a clarion call to all stakeholders to team up with the present government in order eradicate all forms of domestic violence.
