The State Working Committee (SWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ondo State chapter, has ratified Tola Alabere as the acting state chairman of the party.
This decision was reached during an emergency meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Akure, the state capital, on Thursday.
Alabere, who previously served as the party’s deputy chairman, assumed the role of acting state chairman following the purported suspension of Fatai Adams from the position earlier in the week.
The appointment of Alabere comes amidst a leadership crisis within the state chapter of the party. The SWC, comprised of leaders of the party, made the decision to endorse Alabere’s appointment after 11 members of the party suspended Adams.
The suspension was based on allegations of engaging in anti-party activities and actions detrimental to the reputation of the PDP.
However, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, issued a statement countering the suspension of Adams.
Ologunagba stated that the SWC lacked the authority to suspend the chairman without seeking approval from the national body.
In defense of their decision, the state chapter of the PDP cited the party’s constitution, asserting that all levels within the party have the power to discipline members acting against the party’s interests.
They highlighted that nine out of the 11 members of the SWC signed the suspension letter, indicating a lack of confidence in Adams’ leadership.
Following the emergency meeting, Kennedy Peretei, the State Publicity Secretary, clarified that Alabere’s appointment was carried out in accordance with the party’s constitution and through due process.
He emphasized the need to avoid a vacuum in the party’s administration, stating that the SWC has the responsibility to take decisive actions in line with the party’s interests.
The leadership crisis in the PDP’s Ondo State chapter continues to unfold, with both sides presenting conflicting interpretations of the party’s constitution and internal processes.
The coming days are likely to see further developments as the party seeks to resolve the impasse and maintain its operational stability in the state.
