The Nigeria Police Force has arrested and detained 10,852 persons across the country for various crimes within the past three months, the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, disclosed on Tuesday.
Speaking at a high-level meeting with police officers from the rank of Commissioner and above, Egbetokun detailed that the arrests, carried out between July and September, involved suspects linked to crimes such as kidnapping, banditry, and armed robbery.
“During the period, 416 arms, 3,672 rounds of ammunition, and 178 vehicles were recovered, while 369 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued,” the IGP stated.
Egbetokun also reported a significant decline in crime rates, particularly in areas such as banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, and cybercrime.
Addressing preparations for the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State, the IGP assured that the police were fully prepared to provide a secure environment for the exercise.
“As we prepare for the upcoming Ondo State off-cycle gubernatorial election, I urge all officers to replicate and build upon the successes recorded in Edo,” Egbetokun said.
He emphasized the importance of professionalism and diligence in the performance of duties, adding, “Our mission is to ensure a secure environment where voters can exercise their democratic rights freely, without fear or intimidation.”
The IGP pledged ongoing collaboration with other security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and stakeholders to safeguard lives and property before, during, and after the election.
Egbetokun also announced plans to ramp up patrols and implement additional security measures throughout the ’ember months to maintain public safety.
