An attempt by two ex-militants to blow up the Calabar/Itu bridge on Oct. 5 was foiled by the police in Akwa Ibom State, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
“On Sept. 20, the command received information that a group of aggrieved militants planned to blow up the Calabar/Itu Bridge,” said Gabriel Achong, Police Commissioner in the state, at a press conference in Uyo.
“Upon thorough and intensive surveillance, on Oct. 5, the two suspects were arrested,” he revealed.
“The suspects are Mr Samuel Coleman Yaw, a Ghanaian resident in Bakassi Local Government and Mr Monday Anthony of Ikang village also in Bakassi.”
The police effected the arrest in collaboration with the State Security Service.
Mr Boronyefa Olorogun alias General Bofa, the mastermind, who escaped, was however traced to Yenagoa in Bayelsa and arrested by a combined team of police and DSS on October 17.
6 (Super power 90) explosives, 5 blasting laps, 3 rolls of detonating cords and 1 Honda Accord 1997 model were recovered from the suspects, according to the police chief.
The commissioner appealed to the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious movements to security agencies.
