Training and re-training of Information Managers remain the most effective way of enhancing their productivity with regards to information dissemination to mobilize support for programmes, policies and projects of any given government.
In this wise, the Ogun State government will continually organise training programmes and workshops for officers in the Ministry of Information and Strategy and indeed, the entire civil service.
The State Head of Service, Mrs. Modupe Adekunle gave this assurance in Abeokuta while declaring open a 3-day workshop organised in collaboration with the Public Affairs Department of the United State of America’s embassy for Information Officers drawn eight States across the country.
Mrs. Adekunle said new trend in information gathering and dissemination demand that an Information Officer should be well grounded and knowledgeable in information and communication technology, noting that the workshop with the theme “Enhancing Good Governance through Media and Grass root outreach – Strategically Navigating the Digital Landscape” would help to sharpen the skills and improve the capacity, capability, productivity and performance of participating Information officers.
“This will effectively assist in information dissemination directed at mobilizing support for Government programmes, policies, projects and best journalism practices in the digital age to complement the untiring efforts of the present administration. Also it will further equip the participants beyond their initial qualifications’ as well as maintain, upgrade and update their skills in achieving the professional competence required for advancement and development in their various States”, Adekunle noted.
She recalled that in spite of its enormous task of the transforming the State, government had remained committed to human capital development as it had been releasing funds for training programmes for its workers.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Alhaji Yusuph Olaniyonu in his address thanked the team from the US Public Affairs Section for the kind gesture which according to him is enjoyed by organizations and groups in Nigeria and Africa at large.
He urged the participants to utilize the privilege to the optimum as this would assist them in achieving future feat.
Earlier in her address, representative of the US Consular-General, Dhehab Ahebreab said in any democracy, the media is expected and should be responsible to give important information to the people.
According to her, it was for this reason that the US embassy had been partnering with different organizations to organise such workshops so that Information Officers and journalists generally would be well equipped to perform the roles creditably.
The 3 day workshop had participants drawn from Oyo, Ondo, Lagos, Osun, Edo, Ekiti, Rivers and Ogun States.
