The Nigerian Prison Service has commenced an investigation into the attempted jailbreak on Friday at the Medium Security Prison Kirikiri, Lagos, in which an inmate died.
The Public Relations Officer for the NPS, Mr. Ope Fatinikun, on Saturday, stated that the Acting Comptroller-General of Prisons, Aminu Suley, had set up a probe panel to investigate the remote and immediate causes behind the riot.
The panel, headed by Assistant Comptroller-General of Prison (Operations), to probe the riot, is expected to submit its findings on or before Friday.
Mr. Fatinikun, who clarified that what took place was a riot and not attempted jailbreak as insinuated, said one person died while seven other inmates were injured during the fracas.
He added that three of those injured were treated and discharged from the Prison’s Clinic, while four are still undergoing treatment in various hospitals.
He said, “Indeed, there was a riot at medium security prison kirikiri, Lagos, yesterday (Friday) at 1330hrs, but the situation was immediately put under control by the prison authority and there was no any case of escapee prisoner”.
Fatiniku said the dead inmate was one of the four that were admitted in the hospitals whose identities were not disclosed for security reasons.
Meanwhile, extra-security measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence of the riot.
