The Ministry of Transport has assured that the Rivers Transport Company is committed to providing optimal service to Rivers people.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Mrs. Stella Wigwe gave the assurance during a familiarization tour of the Rivers Transport Company recently.
Mrs. Wigwe called on the Management of RTC to send in periodic reports noting that according to the terms of concession, Dowelchi Enterprise is expected to send quarterly report to the Ministry.
Earlier, the Deputy General Manager of Rivers Transport Company Mr. John Borlo disclosed that the Rivers State Government had in November 2007 concessioned the Management of RTC to Dowelchi Enterprise noting that at inception the Company provided haulage and inter State service but observed that the RTC currently provide only inter State service.
The Deputy General Manager pledged to send reports of RTC to the Ministry of Transport noting that reports from the concessioner are statutorily expected to be made available to the ministry.
The Permanent Secretary also visited the Port Harcourt City bus and Port Harcourt city tax service which are operating in partnership with the State Government and Skye Bank service.
Mr. Yemi Tayo a representative of Skye Bank stated that the scheme started with 450 taxis and 74 buses leased to Rivers people for empowerment adding that at present only 14 buses are operational.
Mr. Tayo lamented that the inability of both the government and Sky Bank to meet up their obligations is threatening the continuity of the partnership.
