Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said he is unsure whether captain Wayne Rooney will be ready in time for the EFL Cup final against Southampton at Wembley on Sunday.
Mourinho told a news conference that neither Rooney nor defender Phil Jones would be able to play in Wednesday’s Europa League game at St Etienne.
“Rooney is injured. Jones is injured. I don’t think they will recover [for Wednesday],” the manager said earlier.
“Rooney and Jones haven’t trained with the team yet, so I don’t think they will be there for Wednesday.”
Asked whether Rooney could be ready for the Wembley showpiece, he said: “I don’t know.”
However, Rooney was among the players who trained in France ahead of the match, with Mourinho due to announce his squad on Tuesday afternoon.
Mourinho also confirmed that David De Gea and Antonio Valencia had been rested for the FA Cup win against Championship club Blackburn Rovers and would be in contention for St Etienne.
