Ryan Giggs says Manchester United’s players should be relishing the high-pressure games against Liverpool and Manchester City this week.
United have the daunting task of overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit when they host Liverpool in the Europa League on Thursday, and then they must aim to close the gap on the Premier League’s top four when they travel to Manchester City on Sunday.
Giggs, currently working as Louis van Gaal’s assistant, told BBC Radio Manchester that he would have relished those matches during his long and distinguished playing career with the club.
The Welshman said: “If I was playing, I’d be looking forward to this week. Two brilliant games — Liverpool at home and then City away.
“If we win on Sunday then we have a great chance of reaching that top four. If we don’t then it will be very difficult for us.
“It’s a challenge. You’re going to your neighbours, you’re going to your local rivals. You’re a good team and you’re trying to win and trying to get further up the table.”
If United secure victory at the Etihad Stadium they will be one point behind City, who are currently fourth, two points clear of fifth-placed West Ham.
