CS Sfaxien maintained their impressive run with a 3-1 win over Ahly Benghazi in their Group B opener on Sunday in Sfax.
The Tunisians gave the debutants at the group stage a feel of what to expect at the last eight of the premier continental club championship.
Sfaxien, unbeaten this term churned out a performance that matches their thirst for the most sought after title in continental club football.
The homers relied on their aerial superiority to score twice in each half catching the Ahly Benghazi defence off guard on both occasions.
After 14 minutes, Yassine Khennesi scored the opener with a connecting header from captain Ali Maaloul’s corner-kick.
The hosts’ strength of dead-ball situations almost gifted them the second goal on 25 minutes, but Khenissi’s header missed narrowly from a Maaloul free-kick.
Two minutes later, Ahly Benghazi after unsuccessful attempts to break even through Zimbabwe-import Edward Sadomba finally got the equalizer after Sfaxien defender Boulaabi Bassam headed into his own net a throw-in by Solomon Jabason.
On 33 minutes, the Tunisians restored the lead yet again another set piece. Defender Mahmoud Ben Salah soared above his markers to head home from Maaloul’s free-kick.
Sfaxien dominated the second half pinning the visitors to their half on several occasions and substitute Ghazi Challouf put the icing on the cake with the third goal four minutes from time finishing off a pass from dangerman Fakhereddine Ben Youssef.
The Tunisians have three points, just as Entente Setif of Algeria who beat fellow Tunisians Esperance 2-1 in Rades 24-hours earlier.
