Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State yesterday pleaded with striking workers in the state to come to terms with the reality of their salary reduction and return to work as there was no way out of the tight financial angle the state government has found itself.
The state chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) yesterday commenced an indefinite strike action until the state government reverses the deduction of workers June salary among other demands.
Suswam in his appeal to the workers, urged them to “face the reality of the situation and come back to work”.
He explained that “There are two options; either to reduce the salaries of workers or downsize and I felt that the second option would be very bad for the state. What we have done is not reduction but we are harmonizing workers’ salaries with that of teachers so that they can be at par. We have to take this step now given the fact that the resources of the nation has dwindled”.
