Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal may today decamp to the All Progressives Congress (APC), according to reports citing the division of the Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
If Tambuwal does decamp, it will offer him the opportunity to vie for the governorship ticket on the platform of the APC. Already, the party has planned an extraordinary convention for October 29, where the party is expected to amend its constitution to give room for last minute decampees like Tambuwal to be able to contest election under the party’s umbrella.
The APC is expected to scrap the provision in its constitution stipulating a 30-day membership duration for anyone seeking to use the party’s platform to campaign for public office. The party will also adopt a manifesto.
If Tambuwal decamps today, he will make his first appearance as an official member of the APC at the extraordinary convention tomorrow.
Vanguard reports that the Speaker’s switch of party loyalty will in no way affect his continued stay as Speaker.
“He is going to announce it in plenary and he will not resign as speaker and he will not resign as member,” the media platform quoted a close associate of the speaker privy to the development as saying.
Tambuwal’s spokesman, Mallam Imam Imam gave nothing away about the Speaker’s future or what may happen today when contacted yesterday. He however said Tambuwal would soon make the outcome of his consultations on his political future known.
“I wish to say that on every issue, Nigerians know where Tambuwal stands. On every issue, politics, policy Nigerians know Tambuwal, he is not a man who hides his feelings on anything.
“The issue of defection or no defection or his political future is not something that is different. He has said it severally that he is consulting, however, what I have to concede to you is the fact that the outcome of the consultations will be made public sooner rather than later,” Imam said.
