Salihu Lukman, who served as the former National Vice Chairman for the North-West of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has leveled accusations that President Bola Tinubu is encouraging a culture of imposition within the ruling party.
In a statement that was released on Wednesday and titled ‘APC: The Inconvenient Reality,’ Lukman said that it was unacceptable for Tinubu to inspire party members to fight against the culture of imposition, only for him to initiate actions that risk compromising him as a leader who tolerates, if not promotes, imposition within the APC. Lukman’s comments were included in a statement that was titled ‘APC: The Uncomfortable Reality’.
He pointed out that the situation within the APC, after 10 years of existence as a party and eight years as the ruling party, was gradually catching up with what he described as the low standards set by the People’s Democratic Party during its 16 years of control.
He said this occurred after the APC had been in power for eight years. He added that this was happening after the APC had been in existence for 10 years.
A former director general of the Progressives Governors Forum warned that the party might wind up violating the trust that Nigerians have placed in them if proper precautions are not taken.
He stated that “since the emergence of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the new moral leader of the APC produces a new reality whereby potential infractions may be created by initiatives directly coming from the President himself.” A good illustration of this would be the scenario of changing the zoning formula of the APC by unilaterally shifting the position of the National Chairman from North-Central to North-West.
“Even when, for instance, the North-Central remained shut out of consideration from any of the key positions in the leadership of the two chambers of the National Assembly, the position of National Chairman is being occupied by Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje from Kano State, North-West with the North-Central completely merginalized both in the party and in the APC controlled federal government led by President Asiwaju Tinubu. ”
“It is interesting to note that the leaders of the APC are keeping a level head; none of the leaders hailing from the North-Central region appear to be shaken by the new reality. What exactly has President Asiwaju Tinubu been thinking about lately?
“It is also unacceptable that President Asiwaju Tinubu would inspire us to fight against the culture of imposition, only for him to initiate actions that risk compromising him as a leader who tolerates, if not promotes, imposition within the APC,” Asiwaju Tinubu said. “It is also unacceptable that President Tinubu would inspire us to fight against the culture of imposition.”
