The summer transfer window is officially open, and the biggest clubs will not look to complete their business in order to strengthen their squads ahead of the new season. The transfer market is a bit like playing games at an online casino, as clubs must carefully consider all options before making a move on their number one target.
Manchester City and Liverpool have already brought in new strikers, with Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez brought in, respectively. However, it is likely to be busy summer at Old Trafford, as new boss Erik ten Hag looks to build a squad that can play in his preferred style. But which players could United bring in that would make sense this summer?
Frenkie de Jong
Frenkie de Jong is already a player that United have earmarked as their number one target this summer, but a deal still appears to be far away, according to the latest reports. The Dutch midfielder is currently at Barcelona, but the Spanish giants are likely to be under pressure to sell players in order to finance moves to strengthen their own squad.
De Jong is a player that ten Hag knows very well from their time together at Dutch giants Ajax, and the new boss has already made it very clear that the midfielder could play a very crucial role in the heart of his midfield at the Theater of Dreams next season.
Denzel Dumfries
Another player that ten Hag will be very familiar with is Denzel Dumfries, as the right-back played against the new United boss’ Ajax during his time with PSV. The 26-year-old Dutchman signed for Inter Milan last summer after a string of impressive performances for the Netherlands at the European Championships.
However, the Italian giants are already willing to allow the full-back to move on this summer as they look to put together a package to bring Romelu Lukaku back to the San Siro.
The right-back position is certainly something that needs addressing at United, as there are questions surrounding whether either Aaron Wan Bissaka or Diogo Dalot are good enough to make that position their own at Old Trafford.
Anthony
Manchester United is reportedly in the market for an attacking player this season after allowing Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard to leave on free transfers. A player that the club could make a move for played under ten Hag at Ajax last season, as United have already held initial talks with the Dutch giants surrounding a move for Anthony.
The Brazilian 22-year-old only joined the Amsterdam club in the winter of 2020 but has already become one of the most exciting wingers in the European game.
Last season was his most productive to date, as he scored 12 goals in 33 games for Ajax across all competitions. He also looks set to be a vital player for Brazil at the World Cup later in the year, and fine displays in the Premier League for United could ensure that he is among the first names on the team sheet.
Ruben Neves
Manchester United’s summer business in the midfield may not be done with the signing of Frenkie de Jong, as the club desperately need reinforcements after the departures of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, and Juan Mata.
That could lead to a move for Wolves star Ruben Neves. The Portuguese midfielder has been reportedly looking for a route out of the club for well over a year but has remained professional at Wolves with another excellent season at the club last term.
Neves scored four goals from 33 games last season, and at just 25, he still fits the profile of a player that the Red Devils will be looking to bring to the club this summer.
A deal for the midfielder may not be an easy one to complete, as Wolves will likely demand a huge fee for Neves, but if United are desperate to get their man, then a deal is likely to be agreed upon.
