Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal
has responded to accusations that his side’s
recent style of play is not in keeping with the
club’s traditions.
.
Van Gaal has taken a more direct approach in
recent weeks, especially in Manchester United’s FA
Cup replay against Cambridge United, utilising
Marouane Fellaini’s aerial threat.
.
He has also tinkered with the formation he has
employed at Old Trafford and on the road, shifting
from four defenders to three and back again.
.
But for the Dutchman, on the specific question
of whether or not the football is attractive, he
believes it is.
.
“Yes, I think so [that the style of play fits with
tradition] because it is not a question of playing
with wingers or without wingers or playing with
three defenders of four defenders. It is the playing
style which is attractive” , he said via his club’s site.
.
“Okay, until now we could have played better in
possession” , the Dutchman continued.
.
“We have unnecessary losses in ball possession
and we have to improve that, but I think that we
have a very good defensive organisation and also
a very good attacking organisation.”
.
Van Gaal also took time to point to where
Manchester United sit in the goalscoring table and
also defensively in terms of goals conceded.
.
However, the former Bayern Munich and
Barcelona coach did admit that he feels his side
still have much scope for improvement over the
course of the campaign.
.
“We are fourth in the goalscoring league and third
or fourth in the defensive way of playing.
.
“I don’t think we are very bad – we are very good
but we can improve.”
.
Manchester United are next in action on Sunday
when they lock horns with Sam Allardyce’s West
Ham side at Upton Park.
