Following the ruling handed down by the Supreme Court on February 25 upholding President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the election held on February 25, the Labour Party (LP) has stated that it has made the choice to move on.
Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the LP, made the remark while accusing the Supreme Court of tearing apart the foundation of justice and acting in a manner that is contrary to good conscience in its decisions.
The appeal that LP presidential candidate Peter Obi had filed challenging Tinubu’s victory in the most recent presidential election was dismissed by a five-man panel of justices that was led by Justice John Okoro.
Due to the fact that Kashim Shettima had been nominated for both positions, Obi had demanded that he be removed from office.
During the most recent presidential race, he asserted that Shettima did not possess the necessary credentials to serve as Tinubu’s running partner.
On the other hand, Justice Okoro of the Supreme Court stated that the court cannot permit the issue of multiple nomination to be relitigated.
The Supreme Court had already rendered a decision about the case when it was being heard in a lower court, as the justice recalled.
“This topic had no business being discussed in this forum. This court handed down its decision on the case while it was still being considered by the trial court. This appeal does not have any merit, and the court has decided that it should be dismissed.
In a similar manner, the Supreme Court of Nigeria rejected the petition of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which contested Tinubu’s victory in the election.
Although he disagrees with the decision made by the Supreme Court, Abure said that the result was disheartening but that he has hope for the future.
The following is an excerpt from a statement that was released by Abure: “The leadership of Labour Party watched as the sacred fabric of justice and good conscience was shredded today at the Supreme Court as it delivered its verdict in the case between our party, the presidential candidate, and the APC presidential candidate.”
“We are in fact very shocked and surprised that even the apex Court will toe the line of an earlier judgement in spite of all the flaws that are associated with the judgement that was delivered by the Presidential Election Appeal Tribunal,” said one of the lawyers for the losing candidate.
Following the successful execution of our fundamental rights, which have been bestowed upon us by the laws of the land, we are left with no other option than to proceed. Despite the fact that the conclusion of the experiment has left us feeling disheartened and disheartened, we have decided to press on and to maintain an optimistic outlook regarding the prospects for the nation’s future.
“We weep for our institutions that are unable to rise to the occasion and courageously defend democracy and the voices of our people,” said the author. “We weep for our institutions that cannot rise to the occasion.”
