The White House has dismissed reports that President Joe Biden is considering quitting the presidential race, calling them false.
White House Senior Deputy Press Secretary and Deputy Assistant to the President, Andrew Bates, described the report by the New York Times as inaccurate.
Posting on X, Bates wrote: “This claim is absolutely false and if we had been given more than 7 minutes we could have communicated this before it was publicized.”
Bates was responding to a New York Times report alleging that Biden informed his allies he is contemplating withdrawing from the presidential race.
The newspaper quoted an anonymous source stating, “He knows if he has two more events like that, we’re in a different place,” referring to Biden’s poor performance in last week’s presidential debate.
The report suggested this was the first indication that Biden is seriously considering whether he can recover after the debate in Atlanta.
It cited a conversation with a key ally, who mentioned Biden’s awareness of the uphill battle to convince voters, donors, and the political class that his debate performance was an anomaly.
The report added that President Biden told an ally that he might not be able to salvage his candidacy if he cannot convince the public in the coming days that he is capable of the job after the debate.
According to the report, the president, who remains committed to re-election, understands the importance of his next few appearances, particularly an interview scheduled for Friday with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News and campaign stops in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
