The World Trade Organization, has in commemoration of it’s 25th year anniversary tend towards getting a female Director- General, and in view of this celebrates it’s women pioneers. These women according to the WTO, have made landmark contributions to the WTO and have developed international trade.
One of these women is Arancha Gonzalez, who was the first woman to attain the position of a chief of staff to a WTO Director-General, in the cabinet of Pascal Lamy. She was also appointed as the Executive-Director of the International Trade Center in 2013. In 2020, Arancha Gonzalez, was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the European Union and Cooperation of Spain.
In her words, Arancha Gonzalez stated that her passion for international trade is not only about money. According to her trade connects the rich and the poor, the big and the small. She however emphasized the need to recognize the value of multilateralism, which means giving ourselves rules that works internationally, to ensure that trade works for everyone regardless of gender, meaning both male and female.
Arancha as well noted that women have a big role to play in international trade. She thus advised women to follow their dreams. She adviced women to bust discriminations whenever they come accros it, they should fight discriminations with a smile because there is need to make sure that international trade and the global economy leaves no one behind.
